Interior Inspiration For The New House

My move to Amsterdam is only two months (maybe less) away, and I’m beyond excited. After four years in a studio, I’ll finally have an entire apartment to decorate! Let’s be honest here, decorating the new place is one of the things I’m most excited about. Hello, multiple rooms! I’ve been Pinteresting away ever since the house hunt started and went through a new wave of pins every time another potential house presented itself. By now I have almost a year’s worth of pins for various different rooms (including some we didn’t end up getting), so I have a pretty good idea of what I like. I also have a general idea of where I want to go with each room, so today I thought I’d share some of my inspiration with you. Just to get a feeling of how I’m planning to decorate! Oh, by the way, Robbert doesn’t care much about interior decorating and he likes my taste, so I’ve been granted a lot of decorating freedom. I do run everything by him of course :)

Our apartment is 50m2. That’s quite an average size for a one or two person apartment in Amsterdam, but it’s still pretty small so we’ll have to figure out some smart solutions to make the most out of the space.
We have the living room, which flows into an open plan kitchen. Then there’s one bedroom, with a small laundry closet inside. Besides that we’ll only have a bathroom and a hallway, haha!

Living Room

I already have some furniture and decoration of course, and I do plan to bring that back and build on what I already have. I feel comfortable in that style and as many friends have kindly complimented my current interior, I take it it’s welcoming and warm for guests as well. It’s home to me, and I want to hold on to the feeling I’ve created now. However, I do also want to take it to another level and change it up a little bit, to fit the new space. Looking at my pins, it’s quite obvious what type of style I gravitate towards:

A white base with light, natural wood and a hint of black accents. LOTS of plants. Enough space to showcase books and personal trinkets, while maintaining a calm atmosphere at the same time. Bright and clean, but not too minimalist. I feel like this is a very realistic vision for our living room! I’m a tad worried about the black accents though: I feel like they’re a bit of a trend thing and I might tire of them quickly. I used to have black accents in the living room in my first home, and I really grew to dislike them at the end. Back then I did combine the black with red though (yikes!) and in a very different style, so I feel like it’ll be better this time. Anyway, we’ll see where it goes with the black. White, wood and plants will be the focus :)

Kitchen & Dining

The kitchen has recently been renovated, and I love the way it currently looks. It’s going to match the rest of the house wonderfully and will be a dream to decorate! The kitchen is quite small, but I still want to make it our own while keeping it simple.

I just realised this is the exact same style as the living room, but kitchen themed. Lol!

As far as the dining room goes, it’s probably going to be reduced to just a small dining table in the space between the kitchen and the lounge. As we were strolling around Ikea a while back, we bumped into the bar tables. We unexpectedly found ourselves really liking the idea of using a bigger bar for a dining table. It’s unique and different in a subtle way, it fills out vertical space nicely, and I think it’ll be really practical. I’d love to have a space where I can work or do things while standing up. I’m behind a desk for a large part of the day, and being able to have a more active posture for some of that would be wonderful. We’ll see if we go through with this, but it’s something we’re considering!

Bedroom & Office

The bedroom, I’d like to keep really simple. A simple bed, light coloured bedding, and big, white wardrobes. Maybe a plant or two :)

As we only have two rooms and I really don’t like the idea of having the office space crammed into a room that already has three functions, we’ll have to incorporate a section of “office” into the bedroom. I’m still trying to figure out the best way to do that, I’ll probably need to get the measurements of the room first, but in the meantime I did get some inspiration for what I’d like it to look like. If at all possible, I’d like to separate the office area from the sleeping area with a curtain or closet.

Now that I’m looking at these photos, I think it’s really funny how much it all matches. At least I can be sure this is a style I really like, haha! If you want to see more photos, check out my Pinterest page. I can’t wait to actually get my hands on some furniture and make this happen!

  1. I like the photos with white, wood, plants – it’s a nice clean look. But maybe it’s a bit too much to have in every single room? Maybe the bathroom or bedroom could have a different look? Just a thought.
