Happy Monday my lovely readers! Hopefully you’ve had a nicely energizing weekend and you’re ready to tackle a new week. My weekend was a little busier than I’d like, but that’s completely my fault as I had a bit of an issue with time management this past week. It happens to the best of us! I did manage to get all my content made and uploaded, ruin and fix a wig, and ruin and fix my eyebrows. Amongst other things, of course. Let’s take a look at what I’ve been up to!
I spent an entire day decluttering and re-organising my closet. It was time to bring my winter clothing up from storage and get rid of a few pieces that I hadn’t worn for a long time and felt didn’t belong in my wardrobe any more. One of my most important areas to declutter and organise was this drawer, which I’ve hogged at the bottom of Robbert’s side of the closet. It holds my loungewear, pyjamas, workout clothes and scouting clothes and was out of control. I got rid of a bunch of stuff and am overjoyed with the result. Not only does the drawer open and close normally again, I now exclusively have complete sets in here, no mismatched pieces. I only have a few sets of everything and it’s much less overwhelming than it was before.
I’m also very happy about clearing out a bunch of handbags. This whole top shelf was riddled with handbags, even though I only really use two or three actively. The hanging rod in my closet got subjected to a critical eye too, and it’s now emptier than it’s ever been. If you’d told me a few years ago I’d be excited about having fewer items there’s no way I would’ve believed you, haha! I’m now at a point in my life where I really prefer things to be simple and clear though, and to only own things that I truly enjoy having.
I filmed the whole process of decluttering my wardrobe (shoes as well) in this video so you can check that out if you’re interested.
Loaded nachos for dinner! One of our ultimate favourites. I tried making it with vegan cheese this time, but I can’t get that stuff to melt for the life of me. I really hope an actually good brand of vegan cheese will come to the market soon because right now, none of the ones we have in NL are worth the money.
Editing the closet declutter video. This always takes longer than I expect, oops!
My short black wig finally arrived! It was stuck in customs for the longest time but I was finally able to get my hands on it last week. This synthetic wig was sent to me by Babala Hair, and I absolutely love it. That same evening I started customizing the wig: plucking away hair near the hairline and parting and cutting the lace. As I was tweezing the hair, I used the wig brush that came with it to get the loose hair out. Aaaand I shouldn’t have done that. People always tell me not to brush curls but as it’s never a problem on my hair, I do it anyway. This time however, baaaad idea. The wig did just what natural curls do when brushed and exploded into a giant ball of shapeless frizz. Nothing I did helped to get these gorgeous waves back, and I was at a loss. Over the next two days I tried every trick in the book. Shaking it to get the curls back, trying to re-shape them with my hands, spraying it with water, washing it, soaking it in fabric softener… Nothing worked, although the fabric softener did make the fibers look a lot more natural and soft. I was pretty close to desperation for ruining such a gorgeous wig.
I tried a brow tattoo for the first time this week. This is one from the Kruidvat brand, the darkest colour they carry. I left it on for two hours before taking it off and revealing…
This. Ouch. You can’t see it that well, but basically there was a reddish brown outline around my eyebrows. Not a very good look! Luckily the colour outside of where my natural brows are was easy to remove with a makeup wipe, but my brows themselves still came out way too warm. That’s kind of what I feared and the biggest problem with most of these brow tattoos, so I’m afraid they’re just not for me.
I went for a run on Friday morning in this beautiful autumnal landscape. It looks just like an impressionist painting, don’t you think?
Friday night was a bit of a dreaded evening for me, as it was time for my rite of passage at scouting. When you enter a new age group at scouting there’s generally some type of ritual to mark the transition. In our group it’s doing an obstacle course adapted to the age and abilities of the kids which, for the oldest age groups only, ends in crossing the ditch behind the building. As I’m now a leader for the explorer scouts (14-18) I had to to go as well. I’ve done it once before when I first joined this scouting group so I knew what to expect, but it’s not my favourite thing to do as you can imagine, haha! The new kids did it as well and they loved it (which I’ll never understand but they were actually excited for it), and luckily we were able to take a nice hot shower and enjoy a cup of tea afterwards :) And it makes for really funny video footage. Oh, I’m glad I hadn’t donated the clothes I’d separated out earlier this week yet as I was able to use them for this purpose. I used the pink shoes for my obstacle course and they went straight in the bin, but the rest of my outfit I’ve washed and am going to donate still.
By Saturday I really had to start working on Sunday’s video which I’d planned to use the wig in, so it needed to be fixed. I was about to take drastic measures and try steaming the wig at the risk of melting the fibers, when I decided to check online one last time and found out Babala Hair wigs are actually heat resistant, meaning you can heat style them! I was able to straighten it first and then curl it on the lowest setting of my curling iron, and it was restored to full glory. Phew!
The style of the curls is quite different from what it originally was, but I think I might actually like this more. It looks nice and vintage this way and I love it!
In the afternoon I headed back to scouting again as the younger kids had a movie camp. This is an annual event where the building gets transformed into a cinema and the kids have a movie marathon in a certain theme. This year the theme was circus, and they asked me to come do the kids’ face paint. I stayed to watch the short films the kids made themselves and then I went home again to clean up the mess I’d made from trying to fix the wig.
The ratties are getting more and more persistent in their attempts to destroy everything we own, so I’m taking more drastic measures to keep them away from the curtains. So far this seems to work, fingers crossed!
As I’d only gotten around to filming the wig portion of the video on Saturday afternoon, I had to film, edit and upload the rest on Sunday. Luckily I was able to finish all of that with a nice chunk of the day left still, so afterwards I headed into town to do a bit of shopping.
I was looking for a fabric shaver and I didn’t find any, but I did happen to run into a Japan festival which was being held on the main square. I had no idea that was today but it was really fun so I hung around for a while before heading back home to spend the evening with Robbert who had just returned from movie camp.
And that concludes my week! I’ll talk to you soon :)
Lucy, I’ve been having a tough couple of weeks, and I just want to thank you for uplifting me with your weekly update post. It felt like a hug this Monday :-) Also, as someone with shoulder length, black, very curly hair, I was on the edge of my seat regarding your wig ordeal. Good job figuring it out! What a ride. Have a great week!
