Hi Lucy!
I am an old lady in my 70s and “in my times” we used those pink sponge rollers, and also metal ones.
Usually to keep the curls from popping up, one had to brush with one hand, while shaping them over the other hand, mostly the wrist; not just brushing them with one hand, and allowing them to go their own way.
In the old times, people shaped their curls with a curling stick. It looked exactly like a curling iron, but made up of wood. One end of the stick was for smaller curls, and the other for wider curls. My mother had one of those.
You could also shape your curls with a cold curling iron. Specially the longer ones at the back. People also used bobby pins to hold the curls at the desired length.
I don’t know what look you were trying to achieve, but I thought that the curls were nice after you put the pomade.
