Style Inspiration: 1950s Brigitte Bardot

It’s no secret that Brigitte Bardot is my no. 1 beauty inspiration: after my Three Brigitte Bardot Hairstyles, Three More Brigitte Bardot Hairstyles and the Beauty Beacons episode I did on her I’m sure it’s pretty obvious how I feel about her style. It’s also no secret I’m quite drawn to 50s fashion. A while back I was browsing Pinterest and I came across a photo of Brigitte in the early 1950s. It blew me away! She’s known mostly as a 1960s superstar, but my oh my, her 50s look is even better! I can’t help but think 50s Brigitte is the epitome of natural beauty and laid-back elegance. If I had to pick one person whose style to wear exclusively for the rest of my life, I wouldn’t hesitate one second to name her. I’ve selected a few photos to share with you as style inspiration today: from her early, dark-haired days up until the late 50s.

The power of simplicity! This is quite a basic dress, but the flattering cut and layer of polka dots hidden under the skirt give it just enough visual interest. I’d love to get my hands on a dress like this!

The 50s cut of dresses is just perfection in my eyes. It’s flattering for almost all body types and looks amazing even when the dress itself is simple.

A plain black boatneck shirt with high-waisted trousers. This one I’m not sure I’d copy exactly as it is, but how gorgeous does she look? I love the darker hair on her as well.

Here’s a very similar (or the same) outfit, with a different hairstyle. Notice how the bare ankles make her legs look miles long!

I think I’m just always going to tuck my t-shirts into high-waist bottoms from now on. Also, I only now notices she’s not wearing shoes in any of these photos. Apparently I like that look, haha!

If I look half as fabulous in my floppy straw hats, I’m a happy girl. Hats are such an underrated accessory, but I absolutely love them.

A simple black t-shirt paired with a voluminous skirt, cinched at the waist with a belt. So simple, so effective.

Now here’s an outfit I do actually wear already. A white t-shirt tucked into a knee-length skirt. Can’t go wrong with this, especially if you have amazing hair to top it off!

I’m sensing a pattern here. Plain white T, high-waist jeans. Two staples.

Oh look, shoes! Haha! Dark hair with bangs and the typical plain shirt with high-waited pants. I really need to go out and look for some good pairs of high-waisted pants, they’re so flattering.

Now here’s another thing I never wear: striped tops. I feel like this is a basic that everyone has but for some reason I’ve never jumped on this bandwagon myself. Might be time to give it a go! This is such an easy item to combine.

Alright, I need this coat right now. Look how gorgeous this is! I love this type of coat that has an accentuated waitsline, and this one is extra beautiful with the wide sleeves. This would fit right into modern fashion as well. Love it!

I believe the proper word is “goals”? Haha! This makes me so excited for summer. I can’t wait to wear my straw hats again!

But you know, it’s completely possible to look dashing in winter as well. Ending the list with a gorgeous young BB in an oversized coat in front of the Eiffel tower.

What this proves is that simple doesn’t have to be boring, and that less is definitely more. I much prefer this style of 50s clothing to the super glamorous or pin up/rockabilly style you often see in the USA. Simple elegance is what it’s about in my opinion! So what do you think? Would you wear something like this?

  1. I love the outfit with the simple trousers and off-shoulder top! I wouldn’t wear the long long skirts, I kinda wouldn’t feel myself in them!

  2. Lovely post as always! Young Brigette was such a stunner, I almost prefer this carefree simplicity to her later more “done up” looks!
