I’m 28! The Things I’m Looking Forward To

I was one of the last people who hadn’t had a pandemic birthday yet- until yesterday. Yesterday, I turned 28!

Even though we weren’t allowed to throw a party, it was still a very nice birthday. Better than expected, even. Our home is now filled with beautiful fresh (and dried) flowers, leftovers from delicious food and happy energy.

For some reason, I’ve always felt like the year I’m 28 would be a special one. 28 is my lucky number and it just always seemed like a great age to be. Still young and free, but old enough to be confident and take hold of opportunities. Even though this year has been off to a rough start with a prolonged lockdown and my two beloved, very senior rats passing away, I’m hopeful this year will be much better than the last one. There are some pretty major things in the works that I’m looking forward to, and that’s what I wanted to focus on for today’s post.

The Wedding

The biggest and most obvious one is, of course, our upcoming wedding. Robbert and I are getting married on our 10th anniversary in spring and I can’t wait for the day to arrive.
We are a little bit nervous about Covid and the measures in place right now, but there’s still hope we might be able to do the wedding as we planned. If not, we’ll probably have to have only the ceremony on the date we have planned, and move the rest of the celebrations to a later date. We’d rather do everything in one day of course, but splitting the wedding up wouldn’t be too bad either and I’m sure both celebrations would still be amazing. We’ll make the most of it no matter what!

The Move

Something else I’ve been mentioning here and there is our wish to buy property and move to our own home. It looks like we should be able to set the process into motion this year, to get a mortgage and start looking at houses and apartments. The housing market is insane in the Netherlands right now with scarcity and prices going through the roof so we might not manage to actually buy something and move this year, but we’re planning to make a serious effort. I’m very, very excited about this whole process as I love all things to do with houses. Can’t wait to get started!

The Loved Ones

Even though vaccinations in the EU are going slower than anticipated, there’s still hope that we might reach a safe level sometime in the second half of 2021. I absolutely cannot wait to be able to see my loved ones again; my friends (more than one at a time), my and Robbert’s family, and above all, my family abroad who I haven’t seen in a year and a half now. I’m crossing all my fingers and toes every day that this will happen sooner rather than later.

Getting Life Back

Along the same lines, I’m really looking forward to slowly getting more and more of normal life back. I’m so excited to visit a restaurant or theme park, to go to a party or music festival, to follow ballet lessons again and go back to the gym. I can’t wait to host dinners and game nights and to maybe even go on a cheeky little honeymoon. I’ll appreciate these things I previously took for granted so much more now. Let’s hope things like these are in our futures this year.

Babies!

I’ve entered the phase in life where people around me are slowly but surely starting to have children, and I love it. As much as I still struggle with awkwardness around children (I don’t think this will ever change, haha), I adore babies and am very excited to enter this next stage in life with my peers. I can’t wait to meet my friends’ babies and experience everything surrounding them from more up close. Auntie Lucy at your service!

Times are still very uncertain and these things might not actually happen this year. I’m trying to manage my expectations a bit, but still remain hopeful. The world has been out of order for a long time now and I’m sure it’s not just me who’s finding it harder and harder to handle. Having these things to look forward to, along with the hope the vaccines bring, makes our current situation a bit more bearable.

I truly hope you have something to look forward to as well, even if it’s just alleviation of strict Covid measures. Let’s hope for an amazing year!

  1. Happy birthday! Such an exciting time for you :)
Have you decided if you want children? I’m considering this myself and it would be great to read your point of view!
    Best wishes,

    1. I’ve been very, VERY afraid of the idea of having children for a long time, but I think I’m slowly coming to a point where I can say I’d like to have a baby within the next couple of years. I’m hoping that having more children around me will help me make up my mind for good, although any such thing is out of the question until we find another place to live. Everything in due time! :)

  2. :) Such a lovely positive post. I’m turning 28 this year too and we’re hoping to buy our first house – I’m looking forward to many of the things on that list too. Bring on some freedom ;) (From a fully locked-down UK) Happy belated birthday! xox
