Time to get wild. In today’s episode, I’m going to talk about makeup trends and developments in the 1980’s. Enjoy!

In the 70’s the economy was bad, skirts were long, makeup was minimal or natural, it was sort of as if everyone was in mourning, although the look was quite feminine and beautiful.
It’s interesting that a lot has been written about how skirt style-lengths in popular culture seem to go down when the economy is bad, and skirt style-lengths in popular culture seem to go up when the economy is good.
In the 80’s the economy was great, so skirt lengths went back up, people had money to spend so it was as if everyone was celebrating, people had time and money to spend on makeup & exploring clothing styles. People who participated in popular culture started appearing paler because of the media-scare/hype about the so-called hazards of sunning, so those people started avoiding the sun and buying sun-block-lotions (it’s now been proven, of course, that sun exposure is good and very healthy for you when done in moderation like everything else).
Because people were avoiding sun-exposure, their complexions started looking paste-y and unhealthy, so heavy make-up and contouring put some color back into the face, and since the 80’s was celebrating excess the amount of makeup used was “over the top”.
Thanks for your makeup history videos. I’ve enjoyed how you bring in historical cultural- and economic-ties. Looking forward to your next one!
