Welcome to a new episode of Dutch Word Of The Week! One word out of the Dutch language will be highlighted in these videos (which are exclusive to my blog & won’t turn up in your YouTube subscription boxes) every week. I hope you enjoy them, I sure have lots of fun filming these!

This week’s word is “gezellig”. Enjoy!

  1. Oh, in danish we have a word like that, called ‘hygge.’ Basically it means that something is cozy, but it’s actually quite hard to explain to foreigners what exactly it means, and it can be used sarcastically:-)

    1. I agree Isabella. We have the same in Norway. We do use the word “hygge” in Norway as well. We do have a lot in common :)

  2. In german we have”gesellig”, too! But my understanding of the word differs from your explanation. Just a little, though. For example I never heard of a TV show being “gesellig”. But having friends over or a person can be “gesellig”. Synonyms are “social” and “entertaining” which I feel both can’t quite catch the feeling of “gesellig”.
