Customising a Wig

I think I’ve got the art of wearing extensions down pretty well, but you should know I’m a total noob when it comes to wigs. I own two wigs at the moment and never wore either of them out before last weekend when I wore this bright red wig to Elfia. They always look very wiggy on me and I never really knew why, I thoughy it was just the quality of the wig, until I found out that you’re supposed to customise a wig before you wear it. Oh… So onto YouTube I went to find out all the ins and outs of wig customisation!

This is what the wig looked like when I got it. I cut off the excess lace in the front, that I understood needed to be done, but nothing more. You can see the hairline looks very strange.

I looked up tutorials on how to customise a lace wig and this is the one I ended up using, it’s really good:

I was quite shocked by how much hair she removed, but then again it makes perfect sense. There’s WAY too much hair on the hairline of my wig so I knew I had to be ruthless here.

So I took a pair of tweezers and went at it! The thing she did with the baby hairs was absolutely genius in my opinion, so I decided to make some of those as well. I also gave my wig a side parting and changed the shape of the hairline to match mine better.

I don’t have one of those wig forms so I just plucked the hairs while the wig was on me. It’s less of a comfortable position to work in but I liked that I was able to see what it would end up looking like right away.

So much hair! I really attacked that hairline and this is the amount of hair I removed. It looks so scary! But the hairline definitely looks better and way more natural. In hindsight I actually think I could have taken even more hair out, I might get back to that one day.

Here you can see some of the baby hairs I created on the side, I think that really gives it more of a natural feeling. One thing I wish I could do is bleach the knots of the wig. Now you can see a little dot at the base of each hair where it’s attached to the lace, and bleaching that dot makes it less noticable. I can’t bleach mine however as my wig is synthetic, but that would have really helped make the wig look more natural.

I’m super happy with how this turned out! I’m definitely planning on doing it with my other wig as well, which is a brown to blonde ombre and should look more natural anyway. I will have to really find some time for that since this took me several hours to do. It’s a tedious task but so worth it when you want your wig to look even remotely natural!

  1. Hi ! Thanks so much for your tutorial(s) (all of them actually !). The video in the link is not available to me : is the link or is it because I am in France ?

  2. Thanks for sharing this information with us. A few days before I was searching on the internet and find one website which provide different types of wigs at the affordable price. One of my friends bought the whole lace wigs from that website and she is happy with the wig quality at that price. I will surely tell her about the way to handle the curly wigs.
