NYX Bare With Me Base Review

NYX recently launched a new makeup collection, headed in a completely different direction than what they’ve been doing for the past years. Surprisingly for a brand that focuses on heavy Instagram makeup, but also not surprisingly at all since it’s super on trend, Bare With Me is a mini collection of natural looking no-makeup makeup. The collection features a few base products that have the moisturizing properties of skin care, and leave you with a beautifully fresh-faced look. When I heard they were presenting this collection I got really excited, as it sound like something that’s straight up my alley. I’m all over the natural, minimal makeup look for everyday wear. So, I decided to attend the launch party, and they kindly sent me off with some of the new products at the end. Let’s take a look at them!

Hydrating Jelly Primer

First up: the hydrating jelly primer. They took this quite literally: it’s a jelly. I’ll be completely honest, I feel like a little kid poking my finger in the wobbly substance and I love it. It comes in a twist-cap jar reminiscent of skincare packaging, which holds 1.41 oz. or 40 g.

This primer promises to extend the wear of makeup, blur the appearance of pores, provide a non-sticky, light-weight feel, blend seamlessly and leave the skin feeling refreshed and moisturized for up to 8 hours. The formula is water-based and infused with aloe and cucumber, which really does make it feel more like a lightweight moisturizer than your typical makeup primer.

The scent of this product is a little bit clinical to me, but it’s not prominent. For the formula, as fun as the jelly is to play with, it makes it really hard to pick up exactly the amount you need. I end up using way more of this product than I normally would. That’s not a huge problem as my skin absorbs the water-based formula quite well, but it’s something to keep in mind. The primer is vegan.

Tinted Skin Veil

The new tinted skin veil. Is it a foundation? Tinted moisturizer? BB cream? I’d say it’s somewhere in-between. The non-comedogenic skin veil promises to give you a fresh-faced look by evening out the skin tone and providing seamless coverage and luminous looking skin with a breathable formula that does not streak and lasts up to 8 hours. It also claims to have moisturizing properties that provide 8 hour hydration, and, like the primer, this product is infused with aloe and cucumber.

The tinted skin veil comes in a practical little squeezy tube that holds 0.91 fl. oz. or 27 ml.
I have the colour BWMSV02 here, Vanilla Nude. They offer a pretty wide range of 12 shades ranging from Pale Light to Deep Espresso. This product is vegan.

Prime, Set, Refresh Multitasking Spray

Prime, Set, Refresh is a sensitive skin-friendly multitasking spray that can be used at the beginning of your makeup routine, again at the end, and whenever you need a quick refresh during the day. It promises to prime the skin for makeup, minimize the appearance of pores, set makeup, prevent it from smudging and help make it last throughout the day. It also makes the skin look refreshed and rested, gives the skin a dewy glow and makes it feel smoother. This product, like the other two, is infused with aloe and cucumber and promises to hydrate the skin for up to 8 hours.

The multitasking spray has a botanical scent that’s really lovely and fresh. It comes out in a nice even fine mist. The bottle holds 4.39 fl. oz. or 130 ml.

How It Performs

Starting off with a picture of my face without any makeup, for comparison.

Here I’ve applied the primer, skin veil and multitasking spray. The difference is minimal, but the redness around my nose and forehead is definitely blurred out a bit. It evens out the skin just a touch and gives that lovely my-skin-but-better look that I love. The skin veil is easily buildable though and a second layer would cover the redness better. My skin also looks like it has more of a glow now, and just looks a bit fresher in general. The product itself is nearly undetectable unless you get really upclose. I apply it with my fingers, and it does melt into the skin seamlessly.

Also, can we just talk about how perfectly this shade blends into my pale olive skin? It has a neutral undertone that works really well.

After I apply a touch of under eye concealer, some tinted brow gel, mascara, blush and lip balm, I’m left with this beautiful no-makeup makeup look. My skin looks natural but evened out, like a 20% blur in a skin smoothing app :) I think this trio of products provides an absolutely lovely base for a minimal makeup look that’s perfect for everyday wear. The primer and spray feel really nice applied on freshly cleaned skin in the morning, and I find myself often skipping moisturizer altogether if I’m planning to use this.

The base makeup lasts all day on me, and feels really comfortable on the skin.

If you’re planning to buy something from this collection, I recommend getting the tinted skin veil and multitasking spray. The primer, although really nice, is a bit of a gimmicky product in my opinion and it’s not really necessary if you have the spray, which serves the same function. If you like light, natural, nourishing makeup, I can definitely recommend this line.
