10 Unpopular Opinions I Hold

Whoa, controversial content on Loepsie? Well, only slightly so :) I thought it’d be fun to share ten of my unpopular opinions: things in which I disagree with the general consensus. This is just a bit of light-hearted fun, so please don’t take my opinions too seriously. I wonder how unpopular they truly are, anyway.

I’d love to hear how you feel about these topics, and if there are any other unpopular opinions you hold. Let me know in the comments!

1. I don’t enjoy tabletop games

There, I said it. I’ve rarely met anyone who relates to my strugge with tabletop games, in fact most people around me adore them, but I just cannot see their appeal. I’m sorry! Boardgames are the worst. They usually take way too long to finish, they encourage pointless arguments and animosity among the players, and I don’t enjoy the competitive element. I’m not a good loser (which is probably a large part of why I don’t enjoy games), and playing stresses me out.
There are a few games I’m willing to play occasionally, and I do quite enjoy some games that are quick and snappy, but don’t ever come near me with Monopoly.

2. Vegetables are better than fruit

I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, and I tend to prefer savoury flavours over sweet ones. Produce is no exception. I much prefer a delicious bell pepper or cherry tomatoes over apples and bananas. Fruit tends to have odd textures and change flavour a lot as it ripens, whereas veggies are much more consistent and nearly always crispy and fresh. Yum!

3. Opera is beautiful

My love for the opera is no secret, but I do feel like it’s unconventional at my age. I’ve received surprised inquiries from other audience members at the opera more times than I can count, as apparently it’s unusual to see younger generations there. Truth be told, if it wasn’t for my youth membership at the opera, I don’t think I’d meet many peers there at all. I believe that in general, opera is one of the more universally disliked genres of music with a very dusty image and I strongly disagree with that.

4. The beach is overrated

Give me forests and hills over beaches any day. I quite enjoy lounging around on a towel on a hot day once or twice a year, but it’s definitely not something I long for regularly or that has a lot of importance to me. I’m not a big fan of large bodies of water, and in general the beach just doesn’t really cut it. To me it’s just… Sand. I don’t like sea-smell either, or fish, or shells… This part of nature just isn’t my cup of tea, haha!

5. Don’t get me started on mushrooms

Oh boy. You have no idea how grateful I am for the “vegan revolution”, which has made vegetarian and vegan options at restaurants more common and plentiful. The days when the only veggie alternative on the menu was a mushroom dish were very trying, haha! I’ve never liked mushrooms, and I still really, really don’t. The texture, the flavour, the idea of them… It’s just a big ol’ nope.

6. Thrill is one of the worst feelings

I’ve never understood the appeal of an adrenaline rush. The first time I went on a rollercoaster as a kid, I screamed and cried the entire time. Not out of joy, but because I felt like I was going to die and it was the most horrifying feeling I’d ever experienced. As I got older I tried similar things a couple more times, since this is supposed to be fun and something people enjoy. The feeling is always the same. Full-blown panic, as if my body is preparing for death. I’ll never understand how people can enjoy that and pay and stand in line to experience it. I feel similarly about realistic or gory horror movies; the feeling of thrill is just extremely unpleasant to me and I don’t understand how people can actually want that.

Seriously though, if anyone could explain to me what thrill feels like to others, I’d be extremely grateful!

7. The only coffee I’ll drink is a Starbuck caramel macchiato

Not sure how unpopular this one is in other countries, but here in the Netherlands drinking Starbucks coffee is considered bad taste and something mostly teenage girls do. However, “good” coffee is the most bitter, weird-tasting stuff and I just really don’t like it. Sweetened milk with a little bit of coffee is the only acceptable way, haha!

8. Mopping floors is kind of gross

In my opinion, the only way of mopping a floor that is truly effective is getting on your hands and knees and scrubbing the whole thing by hand with a cloth that is regularly rinsed under running water. I think everyone agrees that the type of “public space” mopping where it’s essentially just dirt being pushed around with a stinky old mop is nasty, but I’m personally not convinced by smaller-scale household mopping either. I prefer to vacuum clean regularly and spot-clean when necessary.

9. Stand up comedy isn’t funny

Now, this of course depends greatly on the artist, but in general I find most stand up comedians vulgar, loud and unnecessarily offensive. There’s a fine line between a good joke and a painfully bad one, and not many artists know how to walk that line in a way that I enjoy. Robbert does enjoy this genre of theater every now and again and usually when I watch with him, I come out disappointed. It’s not my preferred form of entertainment, in any case!

10. Brussels sprouts are delicious

Brussels sprouts are the most hated vegetable in the Netherlands. I can kind of understand why, they weren’t my favourite when I was a child and boiling (the Dutch way) does them a huge disservice. However, try them oven-baked with pecans, pumpkin and honey. My oh my! Such an underrated vegetable.

  1. Oh. I have to be brave and state my unpopular opinion: I cannot stand the “Friends” show. Why, why, why is it so popular??? Shoot me now.

  2. LOL I was *so* missing and dreaming about eating Brussels sprouts yesterday and I found some today and gobbled them up for dinner haha. Fine by me if people don’t like them. MORE FOR ME! Mwahahahha !!

  3. Ugh, mushrooms. I like a foresty aesthetic and see that mushrooms belong there but I can’t stand eating them. Their consistency is not for me. I’m super sensitive to surface feel in general and this kinda spongey consistency doesn’t feel like food to me. Also, I hate both banana and coconut. The latter smells like vomit to me (apparantly it’s genetic???) and bananas have both an unpleasant smell, flavour, and texture, at least in my mind. I feel like a bad plant-based person because I can’t fathom how people can make banana pancakes, banana ice cream, banana bread, banana everything! Plus, I’m allergic to sunlight, literally, and I dread the beginning of summer every year. Obviously, tanning on the beach is a no-no for my health.

    1. Oh, yes!! I dislike all tropical fruits, but coconuts are baaad and I can only stand banana in one very specific way (whole, just turned yellow but still more on the green side). Banana in anything or banana flavoured things are the worst xD

  4. I agree with some of your dislikes.. Definitely, the one about board games, I hate “monopoly” with all my heart. Although, I like “Scrabble” and “Sorry”.
I also dislike Brussels sprouts, the beach, tanning, horror movies, rap ,music, sunny side eggs I think they are gross; if someone is eating them in front of me, I would put a book or a jar to block the view. I don’t like to be hugged or kissed by someone I just met, so, this social distancing is working well for me.

  5. Haha! I agree with you on some of these, definitely. 3, 6, and 8 for sure. But girl, you do you and enjoy all the things you love and none thaaaaat you don’t that life has to offer!

  6. Well I agree with you on 8/10 😂 I love mushrooms and boardgames, but I’m sooooo with you on the roller coaster thing, I went a couple of times to make my friends of boyfriend happy, but it was never fun so I stopped… Also ripe fruits also gross me out 😂 I do love classical and opera ❤️ it’s nice to see other people with the same opinions than you!

  7. Yes I hate thrills to, that feeling as if your heart is about to jump out of your chest & your skeleton is about to fly out of your body just…. no! I always feel it on rides or when someone drives too fast, I hate it. I haven’t been on a ride for years or even flying – taking off/landing.

  8. I can really relate to number 6. It would be interesting if someone could explain the fun in having panic.

  9. Oh my GOD I agree with you so much about the beach. I sunburn really easily, and also somehow my time of the month always comes right before I’ve planned to go to the beach with my friends and that’s just not fun… I think little kids have fun at the beach because of the sand but as an adult I would much prefer hiking or at least some beautiful countryside.

  10. YES! 100% agree with you on the Brussels Sprouts. They’re terrific baked in olive oil until crispy,
sprinkled with a few nuts or seeds (I add dried cranberries and maple syrup to the party! Cest manifique!) I even eat any leftovers for breakfast.

    1. Totally agree with mopping, thrill, beach (I do likethe idea of those hidden or private beach, without dirt or crowd and on a cloudy day, even though I never experienced it) , coffee, table top games (I on enjoy ludo)..

    2. Haha, so many with which I identify. Board games or anything competitive stresses me out. I played Scrabble and Trivia once or twice with friends but it was for fun and learning not competition. Love opera, veggies, Brussel sprouts. Coffee, bleh, I don’t understand the obsession, Starbucks is over-rated, I’d rather have a matcha or hojicha frappe. Mushrooms taste great to me generally, I do love the beach, hiking’s not my thing but I’d make an exception for Europe and maybe some other places, haha. 8 and 9 totally same for me. Thrills, depends, I dislike horror, gore as well, but I love rollercoasters, I jumped out of a plane and have bungee jumping on my list. I’m simply not scared, something in me trusts that I’m safe. Just think how you feel listening to a fabulous aria, that takes you above all the life problems and inanities that will mean nothing in a 100 years. The essence of life, maybe? 😀.

  11. Wow, I agree 100% on the coffee, mushrooms, opera, beach, sprouts, comedy, mopping and tabletop games (except D&D)! A few of my unpopular opinions are: mayonnaise isn’t very nice, I love having freckles, I don’t like the idea of tanning (I get sunburnt very easily and women in Britain tend to take tanning a little… overboard) and I don’t like pop music. Hope you have a lovely day :D

    1. I’m with you on everything but the mayonnaise. We go through jars like there’s no tomorrow :D

  12. I have unpopular opinions too. I agree with what you said about Coffee, I’ve never really liked it either. I guess you could say that I like a little bit of coffee in my cream and sugar!

    Other unpopular opinions I hold:
    1. I’m not a fan of pop music or rap.
    2. I hate winter (I have a very low tolerance for cold, and who wants to scrape snow and ice off their car every morning?)
    3. I never liked sports.
    4. I don’t like horror movies. They’re unnecessarily gross and disgusting, and I don’t understand why anyone would want to be scared.
    5. I don’t like haunted houses for the same reasons listed above.

    1. Finally someone that also hates winter! Why would I like being cold, huh?! No one gets it xD

Also feel very much the same about horror and haunted houses 😣
