Decorating With Pillows

The ultimate trick to bringing warmth and homeliness into a room is adding fabrics. I found this hard to believe until I saw it with my own eyes: soft materials add a coziness to a room that cannot be achieved any other way. Curtains, throw blankets, and… cushions!

Since I live in a tiny studio apartment, my bed serves as a couch during the day. I wanted to place lots of throw pillows on it, to make it inviting, make it look less like a bed, and to allow comfortably propping oneself up agains the wall. The hunt for the perfect set of cushions is far from over, but I’ve reached a point where I’m really happy with my setup. I want to share a few tips to keep in mind when you’re decorating with cushions!

Colour

Choosing a defined colour palette is key in successful cushion-combination. I chose a neutral colour range from brown to cream and white, but you can use multiple colours, all the same colour, all pastels… Whatever you like and fits the rest of the room!

When you’ve chosen a colour palette, you can use many different textures and patterns and be pretty sure that none of your cushions will clash.

Style

The next thing to consider before you start, is the style of your cushions. The style needs to go with the rest of your interior and be more or less consistent in all the cushions. As you can see, I went with a rather rustic style. If I were to add a throw pillow with a large, geometric print in here, it would look odd, even if it did fit the colour palette. Choose a style and stick to it!

If you’re unsure about what style you want, try making a moodboard on Pinterest. I love making several, in different styles, to decide which I like most!

Size

The last thing is size. The more different shapes and sizes of cushions you have, the better it’ll look! The only thing that still bothers me about my setup is that most of the cushions are roughly the same size. I’d love to put some very large pillows behind the smaller ones, if I ever have the budget for it! For now, I’ve solved this issue by using some different shaped cushions. Two are rectangular, one is owl-shaped, one is moustache-shaped. This brings some variation into the sequence of squares and breaks the repetition!

Consistency

Try to incorporate the same kind of style, colour and feeling into other fabrics in the room. I have a large faux-fur throw on my bed, and a smaller sheepskin on my armchair, paired with a brown toned log-pillow. Repeating the same style throughout all fabrics in your room will pull the space together perfectly.

I hope these tips give you something to go by when you start decorating with soft materials and especially cushions. Feel free to leave any questions below, and good luck!

  1. Super cute! I recently bought some black and white pillow covers from H&M to try to jazz up my apartment living room. Decorative covers really are one of the easiest ways to decorate a smaller place and make it more festive and/or cosy without getting a bunch of stuff that requires lots of storage space! :)

  2. I love your decoration skills, but I simply cannot follow your tips. I want to decorate with everything I like and it's hard to stick with a style when you like metal, Shakira, Adventure Time, Harry Potter, Skyrim and pink.
