My 5 Bad Beauty Habits

Alright guys, it’s time to get honest. No matter how much time you spend on beauty rituals, reading about them or writing about them, I’m sure we all have some bad beauty habits that we know we should lose, but just can’t seem to shake off. I certainly have some myself, and today I’m going to share all of them with you. It’s out in the open now. SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!
(Sorry in advance if this makes you cringe)

Picking off Mascara

I do this in idle moments; when I’m listening to something, watching TV, reading, traveling… I’ll pick the mascara off my eyelashes, especially off the tips. It’s a super weird thing to do, I only started doing it quite recently and I have no idea why I do it, but other than looking odd it’s quite harmless. I know I’m not the only one who does it since I’ve seen others do it before, haha!

Scratching off Nail Polish

Now this I’ve done for years, pretty much since the first time I started wearing nailpolish. When my nailpolish starts chipping I can resist it for about a day, but once the chipping gets worse I get compelled to peel and scratch the polish off my nail. Specifically, I pick it off in the direction of the growth of my nails, so I start near the cuticles. This means I don’t start from where the chips are, which may seem strange, but peeling off nail polish against the direction of growth makes my skin crawl and the polish near my cuticles usually has a little edge from where the polish hit my cuticles while I was painting my nails, and that’s easy to get hold of, haha!
I shouldn’t do this since it damages the nails. Every time you peel or scratch nail polish off, a little layer of nail inevitably comes off with it or at least gets badly damaged. Do it too often and your nails become thin, weak and brittle. Like mine. Oops.

Sleeping on Wet Hair

Now this is something that I’ve tried to stop doing numerous times, but I still haven’t been able to fit it into my schedule. I need to stop sleeping on wet hair. I always shower at night, right before I go to bed, so it’s only convenient for me to wash my hair then as well, and I don’t take the time to blow dry it since I’m usually really tired at that point and only want to sleep.
Hair is extra fragile when wet, and I toss and turn a lot in my sleep which really damages my hair. I often wake up with very frizzy hair and get split ends super quickly. I think it’s due to my sleeping on wet hair but it still hasn’t made me stop doing it. This is one of the really bad beauty habits that I want to lose though, so I think in the future I’m going to try and shower right after dinner so my hair has time to air-dry before I lie on it. Let’s see if I can make it work.

Not Washing Makeup Brushes

Another one that I’ve been struggling with for years. I just get lazy with washing my makeup brushes, it takes so much time! I don’t have sensitive skin or eyes so I don’t get break-outs or anything when I don’t wash my makeup brushes for a while, which makes me extra lazy. It’s really unhygienic though and using dirty brushes makes my makeup look worse too, so I should really do this more often. I’m trying to get into the habit of doing this once in two weeks (which may still not be enough, but it’s SO much more often than I do now), whenever I’ve done a look for a “Face of the Day” post. That’s usually quite heavy makeup which leaves my brushes very dirty, so I’m trying to view the washing of the brushes as part of making the blogpost. So far that’s working quite well!

Ripping off split ends

Gaaaah this is probably the worst one. I can’t stand watching others do this and I HATE that I do it myself, but ripping off split ends is something I do when I’m nervous, anxious, or bored. I don’t pull the split apart, so to speak, I rip it straight off which I guess you could say is better in a way, but still a horribly bad thing to do to your hair. I notice it helps when I do regular dusting sessions through my hair where I cut off split ends with hair cutting scissors, so that there simply aren’t any split ends for me to tear off, but they come back so quickly that this solution doesn’t last long. I HAVE to stop doing this though. I have to.

So there you have it, my bad beauty habits. I’m curious to hear about yours! Do you do any of these things? Are there other bad beauty habits that you have? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I can’t stop touching my hair and face. I scrach my scalp a lot too. All of these are very bad, as it makes my hair and face oily very fast :( And that thin layer of face makeup I put on in the morning disappears by the end of the day…

  2. My worst beauty habits are picking my skin and twirling my hair. It’s not like I don’t get how bad both of them are, especially the picking, but I just can’t help it. Sometimes I even undo my hair to twirl it and scratch my finger nails on single strands. Weird much?

  3. Oh my gosh, I am the worst at picking at my nail polish, and I’m trying so hard to strengthen my nails. X) I also use to sleep on my wet hair ALL the time because I was lazy and it would look fine in the morning… But now I just switched to showering in the morning to wake me up.

  4. Everything except picking off mascara and sleeping with wet hair! To help prevent damage at night with wet hair, you might want to put your hair in a braid or braids and/or wrap your hair up in a silk or satin scarf. Satin protects the hair and helps keep moisture in your hair versus other materials that might dry out your hair. You can also buy satin pillowcases which can help protect your hair at night too. :)

  5. The only nail polish I peel off is the glitter kind. : )
My really bad habit is biting the dry skin around my nails. I do it when I’m nervous. Such a gross thing to do. : /

  6. Dat het slecht is om met nat haar te slapen wist ik niet eens.. Ik doe het namelijk altijd! (wel in een vlecht trouwens, maakt dat verschil?)

  7. I always sleep on wet hair :X My hair it quite short (like, shoulder length) and it’s very strait, so if I let it hair dry or if I blow dry it, it lays all flat on my head (and I hate it) But when I sleep on wet hair, it’s much more voluminous and, well, messy when I get up ^^

  8. Hello, Lucy! I think all of us have at least one or two bad beauty habits. For me it’s going to bed with wet hair. Just like you, I usually wash my hair late in the evening and it doesn’t dry quickly enough. Also I don’t think I look after my hair very well in general. Sometimes it’s hard to find the time to condition or do a hair mask. Or maybe it’s my laziness =)
