Matcha Latte

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you I’m a green tea lover. Green tea is so great in so many ways; besides being delicious, it’s high in antioxidants and amino acids, and contains a little caffeine to boost your brain function. Now, enter matcha tea. Matcha tea is like the super version of your average green tea; it’s made out of a special variety of tea grown in Japan, and actually consists of powdered freeze-dried tea leaves. You mix the powder with liquid to get matcha tea, and since you drink the actual leaf rather than just the tea, the brew is much stronger and you get maximum benefits. Matcha can be used for more than just making tea though, you can mix it into baked goods, smoothies, ice cream… The possibilities are endless! One method of consuming matcha that’s become very popular lately is the matcha latte.

I’ve been wanting to get some matcha powder for a while, and recently I finally found some. I’m over the moon and can’t wait to incorporate it in a bunch of recipes, but today I’m going to show you how I make a matcha latte. Guys, this is SO DELICIOUS! I think it might be one of those flavours you need to get used to, if you’re not a fan of green tea in general you may want to skip the matcha latte, but if you like green tea flavoured things (like the green tea ice cream they have at sushi places, YES PLEASE!) then you’re going to love this.

Ingredients

1 tsp matcha powder
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup milk of choice (I use soy)
Sugar

Whenever you’re brewing green tea, you want to make sure the water isn’t too hot. Anything above 80°C will leave the tea bitter and reduce the health benefits. Matcha tea is extremely delicate and even more sensitive to this than regular green tea, so be sure to heat your water to about 75°C.

Heat up 1/2 cup of water, and stir or whisk in 1 teaspoon of matcha powder. Make sure it’s really well mixed, before adding 1/2 cup of warm, frothed milk. If you like, you can add some sugar to make the drink a little sweeter.

Matcha powder is very sensitive to light and heat, it’s recommended that you keep it in a dark, airtight container in the fridge to keep it from oxidizing too badly.

If you even bump into a matcha latte somewhere, give it a go! It may surprise you. Enjoy your lattes guys!

    1. I have a milk frother, but you can use a little handheld milk frother or a whisk, or put the warm milk in a blender :)

  1. Love matcha and green tea. There’s a lot of neat recipes on Pinterest. There’s a Popsicle one that looks so tasty!
