My First Makeup Muse

Yesterday, I suddenly remembered the first time I was aware of, and truly impressed by, somebody’s makeup. That somebody was Blu Cantrell in the music video for Breathe:

First off, hello major nostalgia. This song was released in 2003. 2003!!! I was ten years old back then, and obviously didn’t have any makeup yet. Although I might have owned a sickeningly sweet Lip Smackers lip balm… Anyways, one day I must’ve been watching MTV, and this video came on. I was absolutely enchanted by Blue Cantrell’s eye makeup. I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how they did it, and this look was my biggest source of beauty inspiration for years to come. I used to draw a lot as a kid, and my favourite subject to draw were “cool girls”. After seeing this music video I started giving all my cool girls coloured eyeshadow and giant lashes. I thought this eye look was the coolest thing ever.

Looking at the music video now, I see WAY too much makeup and WAY too strong of a filter, but as a 10-year-old, I was mega impressed. A little while later, one of my mom’s friends came over to stay with us for a couple of days and she brought me a little toy makeup set, which included cream eyeshadows. One of the eyeshadows was white, and there were some blue creams in there too. I was SO EXCITED! The white cream eyeshadow (to me) looked exactly like the bright eyeshadow Blu Cantrell wears in Breathe. Too bad I couldn’t actually get any pigment out of the cream shadow, or get even an approximation of Blu’s look onto my own eyes. Ah well. Just the potential of the toy makeup kit made me so happy.

When I suddenly remembered this, it made me giggle and I wanted to share it with you, as I’m wondering whether you guys have any early makeup memories like this as well. If so, please share! :)

  1. I don’t own or wear any makeup. I wore a little bit on my wedding day in 2004. I grew up in the 80s, so you can imagine the wild makeup that people had back then! I used to “borrow” my sister’s makeup for fun as a tween and play with it. I particularly liked aqua & hot pink eye shadow :) 80s all the way! I wore a little for fun here and there as a tween/early teen. In high school, I stopped wearing makeup & haven’t since. I occasionally like a tinted lip gloss. And I will use a CC cream some days. I love watching your makeup videos though. The art of makeup is so fun, and I enjoy seeing the transformations. You have a great talent with makeup!
